Episode 138 – with Chris Mussell talking archery in scouting

Happy Christmas everyone.

In this week’s episode I delighted to have as my guest Chris Mussell. Chris is a highly experienced archer as well as being heavily involved with the Scouting organisation in the UK,  specifically with respect to archery.

In the episode we explore how scouting approaches the challenging task of coaching young people but also training scout leaders to enable them to coach young people.

As always the episode is available on Spotify and Amazon music.

I feel this episode provides a really good insight into how the scouting organisation plans, runs and controls the rules of shooting for scouts and leaders. There are obvious similarities to National Field Archery Society events but also key differences, most noticeably the target selection. The scouting prohibits the use of any animal or human like targets, so no shooting zombies or 3D targets.

Of course we do tangent at times into other archery related topics, including chats about past events and campfire chats after festivals.

Thanks for listening and I would like to wish you all a fantastic Christmas and New Year.

Episode – 102 car accident, roof repairs, shot sequence guidance

The latest episode is now live to wrap your ears round and as the title says, there have been a few stressful events. the important thing is we are safe, pretty shook up but unhurt.

In the episode I spend sometime discussing shot sequence in reference to some recent coaching with a student who is continuing to recover from injury following a motorcycle accident several years ago.

We focus on identifying the element of the shock sequence, how easy it is to skip or miss parts out. As you know I have over the years spent a good deal of time offering guidance and advice on this topic and you can read this material in past posts.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I’ve been published and a podcasts update

Those of you who know me well, know that I’m not one to promote my achievements or successes. It’s also fare to say I’ve been feel pretty low recently, whether this is due to the fatigue of work, the variety of issues that are cropping up, or it could also be due to the run up to Christmas. In short I’m not sure.

I’m also not the most confident person, often having long periods of self doubt, so it’s quite nice when something positive occurs. I wanted to take a minute and share the fact I’ve been published.

Those who follow me on Instagram or Facebook will already know , but  I’ve had a couple of articles published in the latest issue of Bow International magazine (issue 156),  in their field archery special.

Bow international

It’s a good read and covers field archery elements that non field archers may not realise. It’s also great to see articles from Alex Tyler on the recent NFAS championship, along with articles on the amazing Allison Wright and Scott Stanbury.

Podcast News

The other thing is the Off the arrow shelf podcasts have hit over 2000 listens, with the latest episode 33 (https://anchor.fm/off-the-arrow-shelf/episodes/episode-33—a-coaching-question—takedown-or-one-piece-recurve-e1bjkgf) covering my answer to a common question coaches are asked. What bow should I buy, a takedown recurve or one piece?.

A few years back I wrote an article covering some of these options https://offthearrowshelf.com/2020/02/06/what-kind-of-bow-should-i-buy/

So thanks for reading and listening. I hope you all have a fantastic festive break, stay safe and well. Good luck for 2022
