Severn Valley Yeoman Foresters shoot report

Severn Valley Yeoman Foresters
22nd of April 2012

Archers gathering at the start
SVYF club located near Droitwich, Worcester, is a bit of a drive from Leicester, but last Sunday saw us pack the car and leave in the hope of dry weather. The forecast was not looking great and memories of pulling arrows out of the swamp were resurfacing. Hopefully it would be only light showers, hopefully.

There were some 200 archers all hoping it would stay dry  which it did until the heaven opened at about 3. Fortunately it didn’t Last too long.

It was a 40 targets with a mix of 3D and paper faces, mostly 3Ds. With 3 groups setting sections of the course we wondered what it would be like, well it worked and worked well. The course flowed well with a couple of stops for grub, we generally weren’t waiting at targets for long. As for the course there was a nice mix of shots and interesting use of terrain with some larger targets close that threw your judgement. Nice to no target faces or 3Ds repeated on the course.

The course is based in woodland surrounding a swampy area so if you go in summer watch out for the midges and mosquitoes as I know I got bit. There are a few long shots but generally a good mix, with the challenge being not the distance but the judement of distance. The course makes the most of the limited height, so despite it being a mostly flat course there are a few shots that make you have to allow for height. Sorry there aren’t any photos, I was tryign to keep camera dry.

As always the SVYF provide a great shoot in short, with excellent catering (love the venison burgers).

Sharon did well with over 600 points and getting a first place in ladies bare bow. Congratulation to fellow Black Arrow archer young Ben too who got a second place.
If anyone reading this can tell me where  a full set of the results are posted please let me know.

Artemis Shoot

So it has been awhile since I last posted, sorry for that. Last weekend (5th-6th of November) saw me camping in a field just north of Belper in Derbyshire, helping out at the Artemis Archers shoot.

This was their first NFAS shoot and because of the vandalism that the site has suffered from recently a few of us braved the cold November night and camped out, patrolling the 20 acres of woods until the early hours to make sure no undesirables tried to trash the place. It must be said that is was a little cold that night and I was very grateful for my sleeping bag which kept me warm through the night.

I’ve uploaded a few photos from the day here https://picasaweb.google.com/111701601294639380446/ArtemisShoot?authuser=0&feat=directlink

It proved a great day with over 130 archers attending the shoot enjoying the wide mix of targets and ranges, ranging from over 60 yards to under 10 yards. The club had chosen a mix of target faces including Martin, Delta, JVD and the new ones from Flybow (DFSV faces) and some of the new range from Merlin Archery  too. One thing I thought was a great idea was a display at admin with images of all the target faces on, showing the scoring zones. Since many people hadn’t seen them before it gave people the opportunity to have a look and idea of where to aim for.

The photo below shows the longest shot in the wood. Over 60 yards across a small valley to the target (brown bear) which was the one I was helping Marshall at.artemis archers famous long shot

Feedback has been really good following the shoot and I hope to be able to get the chance to shoot the course sometime soon, rather than just marshal it. Bye for now

Shoot Report – Castle shoot August Bank Holiday 2011

A few photos from a cracking weekend

Castle August 2011 Above is the trophy Sharon won on the First day

Over the bank holiday weekend we journeyed up to the Castle Bowmen grounds for there 2 1 day shoots. Neither of us had shot Castle before and thought this a great opportunity
So early on Saturday morning we packed the car and headed North, via Loughborough as we had to pick up some camping supplies. We’d arranged to meet up with some fellow archers at a local campsite, (thanks Karen for finding the site, was great) Arriving on Saturday afternoon we pitched the tent and then ended up moving it closer to the Conisbrough Castle Archers (http://www.ccarchers.webs.com/) crew.
Saturday was a BBQ and early ish night for the shoot Sunday. This would be a trophy shoot.
The course proved challenging with 4 loops to allow for stops at catering. Think they could have dropped one of the stops. Good selection of distances and some good use of dead ground. Though if you were under 5ft 6 I think a few shots might have proved very tough. We were shooting with 2 great compound archers from Black Sheep, Mark and Lynn.
Sharon won hence the photo and I got a 3rd place. The plan for the evening was a pub meal but when we got to the pub in the village we discovered they had stopped serving so it was across the road and Chinese take away. This was a great idea as it was fantastic, washed down with liberal amount of alcohol back at the campsite.
The only problem being, my shoulder locking up in the evening when I was getting out of my chair, actually read trying to get out of my chair. Guess it’s still not right and I wondered how it would cope with Monday shoot.
Monday saw some changes to the ground, with pegs moved and the organisers taking on some of the comments from the previous day had changed a few shots. Always good to see a slightly different course on the second day rather than the same again. Again we had the good fortune to shoot with Mark and Lynn
Mark put in a storming day of shooting scoring 900 points, sadly my back and should started playing up three quarters way round, but that was nothing in comparison to Lynn who at one target had her back crack. At this point I must say I think she was fantastic, you could see the pain in her face but she refused to give in and though her score dropped slightly she still put in a storming show. Well done a true inspiration to anyone who has physical difficulties but doesn’t allow them to stop them enjoying the hobby.
So how did the second day go?
Sharon won her second 1st in 2 days and I put in a personal best of 702 to win too.
